Fast and very highly styled, Eurostar runs regular express trains from its main station hub at London St. Pancras to a variety of destinations across the continent. With direct city centre access in most cases, the train really does take the strain out of travel these days. So here’s our top suggestions for some of the main highlights you could visit using the services of Eurostar.
You could just enjoy the journey through the Euro tunnel and go as far as Calais to stock up on your duty frees, grab a decent lunch with some great French wine, and head back home all in just one day, or linger and enjoy the seaside for a few days.
But there are very few who will pass on the chance to see Paris. With its magnificent open boulevards, famous Opera House and the soaring Eiffel Tower, the city of light remains one of the world’s foremost cities.
Lille has a lot of charm built into its cobbled quarters and old buildings, but for great food and fabulous Flemish architecture, vibrant Brussels takes a lot of beating. And whatever you do, do not forget to bring home some of the best chocolate found anywhere in the world.
You could continue on to Bordeaux, on France's Atlantic sea coast where the world really is your oyster, or even northwards to Amsterdam, with its canals lined by gabled houses and vibrant, lively squares.
If winter in the UK leaves you feeling the cold, why not make a quick run for Nice, the smart, highly styled Queen of the French Riviera, with its beautiful seafront promenade and serried, shingle beaches. The climate is sultry even in January, and lacks the crowds of the summer season. By contrast, Cannes is a tad more modern, and famous for its yearly world renowned international film festival that attracts the famous each spring, as well as world famous hotels like the Carlton where the Riviera lifestyle plays out on a glittering stage.
Heading in the other way, you could break out for the German border city of Aachen, with its baroque architecture and bewitching cobbled streets that form a prelude to the mighty River Rhine.
Another summer alternative is the French West coast port of La Rochelle, with its 14th century historic harbour guarded by a pair of imposing forts, row upon row of moored yachts and a waterfront lined by numerous bars, shops and restaurants.
