Packaging Items to Post

When you are thinking about sending things by post, you must ensure they are properly packaged beforehand. Sending items through the post or by courier can cause considerable damage to your things and you need to take into account that your package could be underneath a large or heavy group of other packages. That is the one thing you need to keep in mind when preparing your item to post so that it can sustain such rigours.

There are lots of specifically manufactured packing materials that can be used to make sure that your items arrive undamaged. Much depends upon the item itself and how robust or delicate it is. Obviously delicate items such as glassware will require very careful packaging whereas something like knitwear or books are more easily packed. Taking glass as an example, it is very important to ensure there is plenty of cushioning between the glass and the 'outside world'. If you have the original box for the glassware, it would be a good idea to make use of that. Bubble wrap could be used to wrap the item before putting it into its original box. A larger box can then be used and you can use a suitable cushioning such as foam peanuts to create a good buffer. You can wrap your box with brown paper and then post it. Knitwear is quite straight forward to pack for posting and one of those plastic postal bags or a padded envelope would be most suitable. Books should be packaged in cardboard book packs which will protect the book by fitting tightly around the book. Providing the book is securely held, it won't move inside which makes it unlikely to be damaged during its journey.

There are many different types of packaging which is suitable for use as a postal receptacle and you need to pick the one that suits your needs. Make sure that each is properly sealed and that there are no pieces of packaging that could be snagged as this could cause the package to open or tear whilst in transit. If there are, use parcel tape to secure well. It is worth remembering that your package spends much of its time in a sack or box with many other pieces of mail before being sorted and then going into another sack or box for distribution. Your package may undergo this routine several times before it reaches its destination which is why it is important to make sure you pack your item carefully.

Before packaging your goods, take some time to consider what you are posting and what damage might occur during transit, this should make you more aware of how to wrap it properly. Finally, do make sure that you write the name and address of the recipient on the front of the package and also write your own details on the back so that the recipient knows where it has come from or just in case it has to be returned to you.
