The area of garden design has really come into it's own in recent times. You can incorporate so much into the design of your garden that it can all get confusing. In this article we hope to sort through some of the confusion for you. Start with the basics and so much will fall into place.

What Style Of Garden Design

When it comes right down to it, there is the formal garden design and the informal garden design. While there are many styles in both these designs, elements of the formal design will have structure, the informal garden design will be almost casual in appearance but every plant, path and ornament will have been placed with a definite design in mind. Informal garden designs are sometimes harder to design than the formal type garden.

All The Different Styles Can Be All Beautiful Too

The design should be pleasing to the eye, so all gardens should be designed to be enjoyed. Designing a garden for a person who likes the traditional, would be more the formal type of garden design, whereas a non fussy type of person would like a minimalist style, non-fussy style with maybe sculptures to enhance. The cottage garden design is more suited to the romantic and practical type person will more than likely go for an informal garden design, like a low maintenance garden in the plantings, not big expanses of lawn, good pathways and possibly a vegetable and herb gardens.

The Practical Garden, Herbs And Vegetables

If you like the very modern style garden but still want to have your herbs and vegetables growing, then screen off an area where you can have the herb and vegetable gardens and also include the utilities in this area, like your compost bins, potting table and the garbage bins. This could all be set up nicely and become a wonderful retreat for the vegie gardener.

Catering For More Than One Style, Use Garden Rooms

While we are all different and this is good, when it comes to a garden design that has to be shared, this can be a problem as to what style of garden design. Why not use the 'room' garden design. This is easily done by creating areas or rooms as they are called today, in your garden design that are the styles you each like. You each select the style to suit you for your garden room.

Choose A garden Design To Compliment Your Home

Remember to always make sure your garden design compliments your home. If the home is very modern, then a cottage informal style of garden would look out of place nor would a modern Mexican style design garden fit well into the yard of a traditional 19th century home.

Gather Your Ideas First

If you are unsure, do a little searching on the Internet or visit your local library or bookstore. You will get some wonderful ideas and there are even garden design software programs to help you put it all together.

Whatever style of garden design you choose, make sure it will be one that you will enjoy being in.
