Student Loan Debt Relief: Minimize The Need With Alternative Money

by Holly Petherbridge

If you take a proactive approach to your child's education costs, you may succeed in making your own opportunities for student loan debt relief. The best part of minimizing debt is that you will cut the costs further since these costs will never see a drop of interest. Since college debt tends to add up quickly, any way to lessen the debt makes graduation more affordable.

Save

If parents do not have their own debt to deal with, have an emergency fund for those unexpected costs, have retirement money's on track then it won't hurt your financial situation to start saving for your children's college education. This option is not an option for everyone, but any amount will help.

AP Classes

Advanced Placement classes are a free way to earn college credits while in high school. Most high schools will even offer an AP exam without taking the course. If the high school does not offer classes, ask if you can take the exam anyway. You may cut out a semester or two of college tuition.

Borrow Under Child's Name

Students are offered more financial aid when the applications are in their own name. A parent that applies will be scrutinized on their assets and credit. A loan given to a student will have access to the money for things other than just tuition. Laws vary by state so check the fine print carefully.

Compare net costs

Use the college's net price calculator to compare the costs. Some more expensive schools may cost less in the long run if they are offering to foot part of the bill. See what each school will offer for financial aid before making your decision.

Select value

Once net costs have been established, do some comparative shopping. Prestigious schools do not guarantee higher salaries. Bank on your child's ability and their ambition rather than the name of the school on the degree.

Consider Community College

Community colleges are a less expensive school to complete basic study courses. Tuition is often less expensive per credit and a commute from home saves room and board expenses. Make sure that the credits will transfer successfully.

Search Other Money Avenues

Free money is is often based on talent, academics or an association with a certain group. Talk to your employer and members of the community to find local scholarship offerings. There are many small scholarships to be found if you know enough to apply.

Some parents choose to use their home equity to afford school costs. Interest rates are usually lower than student loans. Weigh your options carefully before putting your home in potential jeopardy if you cannot make the payments.

The idea to pull retirement money out early may seem innocent now, but you should talk to a financial adviser before making a potentially costly mistake. This is not a suitable option for many seeking college funds.

Part-time Job

Encourage your child to work and save for college. Teaching your child how to save is a great financial lesson. It will also teach your child something about time-management, a great skill to have when in college and away from home.

The more money you have to put up-front towards college expenses the less you will have to deal with on the other end. Remember, any loans that you take out will have their own terms and conditions for repayment. Take advantage of federal loans prior to using private lenders. Federal student loan debt relief is readily available to those who apply.
