The Increased Expectations In Technology of The New Generation

by Roddy Smith

What do we mean by the 'technology generation gap?' This refers to the growing divide between young and old in regard to the adoption of technology. Children and teenagers are growing up with technology in ways we cannot imagine and as a result, view the world differently to us.

You have heard of the generation gap in which there is a disconnection between young people and previous generations. Well, this is very similar. The ease of use and enthusiasm by today's generation for new forms of technology is leaving the rest of us behind. Think what it will be like for future generations.

Generation Net This generation was the first to fully embrace technology in the form of the Internet and mobile phones. For them email and texting were their main forms of communication along with forums and chat rooms. Generation Net (or Generation 'Y') were enthusiastic about digital technologies and continue to be so.

The iGeneration If you thought Generation Net were keen on technology then this is nothing compared to the iGeneration. Nicknamed this because of their early adoption of the iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices this generation has never known a life without technology and consequently, are wired to think and act in certain ways.

They expect their technology on demand: to be able to multi-task, to receive information in an instant and to communicate with others whenever they want. The concept of patience, of focusing on one task at a time or restricted access is completely alien to them. As far as they are concerned they can access whatever information they want and at any time of the day.

Today's tech-savvy youngsters are surrounded by Kindles, smartphones such as the iPhone, augmented reality apps, Skype video chats, social media and touchscreen computers. These allow a high degree of interaction which is what it is about for this generation. The ability to participate, to talk to others, provide feedback, play games or create is taken for granted.

Tomorrows tech-savvy consumers These young digital devotees will have much higher expectations then previous generations which raises the bar as far as marketing agencies are concerned. They will need to find new and interesting ways to attract this generation who will be the tech-savvy consumers of tomorrow.

They will not be passive consumers, happy to sit back and absorb whatever marketing messages are out there and consume without giving it much thought. Expect them to be much more demanding about what a product or service will do for them as well as the ability to customise it to their own individual requirements.

Newer forms of technology such as augmented reality which is being adopted by mobile phone companies will be the norm and any business who fails to use this will lose out.

Tomorrow's technological generation will expect to be constantly in touch with family and friends, to share information with all and sundry and to perform any task, e.g. shopping at the top of their fingertips.
