Being Rich- It Is All In Your Mind PART II

It seemed in school as well as in life everything was working against me. It is easy to take that perspective when only looking at current circumstances and that is what I was doing. I did not realize all the things that were occurring or not occurring in my life were going to be the stepping stones to greater heights. I made it through high school and managed to be an average student, however I was highly stressed and flunked Physics and struggled with my math classes. I really had the feeling that if I did not do excellent in High School that I would not make college and thus end up in a dead end job, broke and going nowhere. The stress put on kids in school is crazy because it is just not true. What creates success in life is not getting A’s on the tests and homework, what creates real lasting success is drive, ambition, imagination and human relations. These things are not taught in schools and therefore most never achieve the success they seek.

In 1986 a movie came out called “Top Gun” and at that point I was a gullible teenager who had no real direction of what to do in my coming 1987 graduation. I had no money for college, no scholarship hopes and when I saw the movie “Top Gun” I figured I would be Tom Cruise and join the Air Force, although it was the Navy he was in. Who would not want to live in California, drive a motorcycle, hang out with the mates and live the excitement around fighter jets? It seemed like a great life to me, Hollywood did the armed services proud with that 2 hour recruitment movie.

I skipped off to the Air Force recruiter and signed up for four years. He told me the Air Force not only would give me money for college, they would also train me and pay me. I took their tests and they were impressed with me. They told me the Air Force is where the smarter candidates serve and they said I qualified for 95% of the jobs in the Air Force. I wanted to work on Avionics and my career field was electronics.

I was excited to get on with it so in 1987 upon graduation I was shipped to Lackland Air Force base to start my basic training. I was shipped down with many other recruits from Denver and many Air Force brats. They told me the horrors of basic training, the demand and mind games they played. They told me it was tough and there is a ribbon awarded called Honor Graduate. I told them I would get that, they laughed at me. We took our last bus trip of freedom and spent 6 weeks of psychological games. I received Honor Graduate and blew the minds of those who laughed.

I was then sent DDA (Direct Duty Assignment) to Offutt AFB, NE. Now being a bit dyslexic and requesting International duty I thought I was going to the Netherlands. Fact is I was headed to Omaha, Nebraska. I was not to go to school as stated but sent to a base where they were in need of Civil Engineers aka (working in boiler rooms). I was given a ton of manuals and told I was receiving OJT (On the job Training). I could not believe not only was I in farmland, but I would not see Avionics or electronics…instead I would be caulking officer’s swimming pools, changing A/C filters and painting boiler rooms. I was horrified!!! But this was the start to something that would change my financial life forever…
