Why Agriculture is Important

Our economy is bad and to make it better, we should cut costs of many programs but I don't think Agriculture programs should be cut. Food is the single most important thing in the world, all the other programs like Health Care and Security programs are just an extra benefit that some of us can live without.

But we cannot live without food. Also if our agriculture programs were discontinued, then our food wouldn't be as safe to eat because things like the FDA and other food inspection programs would get discontinued. And in this economic recession we are in, a lot of people are stressed, they don't need extra stress like worrying about whether the food they are eating have been inspected or not.

Diseases are also a danger that makes us value our agriculture more. Things like the mad cow disease affected many animals making them harmful to eat. If a disease that would affect many animals were to occur, then many meats would be not edible. Since we would then have to discard many of those meats, we would lose a lot of food and if the agriculture programs were discontinued, then we wouldn't be able to produce more meat. If agriculture programs were discontinued, funding research to agriculture programs that would get rid of those diseased meats would also get held back. A lot of farms would run out of business if agriculture programs were discontinued.

Some farmers would be forced to sell their land but they can't because the economy is so bad. This would leave them with nothing left to gain money from. Farmers buy a lot of fuel for their tractors/machines as well as a lot of fertilizer and the purchasing of all that helps the economy. Also discontinuing the agriculture programs would lay off many workers of that department which would only make the economy seem even worse than it already is. In fact, the government should keep as many programs as possible because the money they pour into those programs helps employ a lot of people which might actually help the economy.

The average U.S citizen is pretty obese because we consume a lot of food because of our surplus of it. Because we eat a lot, we spend a lot of money on taxes to buy the food we eat so the more food we purchase, the more we are helping our government get money to spend it on things to help strengthen our economy. If we discontinue our agriculture programs, then there wouldn't be as much food sales tax going around. Many organizations that are associated with agriculture like companies that deal with pest control and the selling of pesticide products will also get discontinued if agriculture gets discontinued.

Some people might say that if we continue our agriculture programs, then we would have so much food that it would grow costly to preserve it all then we can donate some to third world countries in Africa. Not only would this make the image of the U.S look better, but it would also help out Africa's food shortage. How can we afford to worry about things whether we can pay off our next car bill when there are people in Africa worrying if they can have enough food to survive?

The economy is always recovering and failing. Something like discontinuing agriculture programs won't change that cycle. It is true that our agriculture programs are expensive but that is what makes us so highly rated in agriculture. The U.S has to keep all its agriculture programs running if it wants to keep its huge success on agriculture. Since we have an abundance of food, we can export some of it to other countries and everyone knows that exporting goods helps the economy. Exports also create more jobs, in 2006 the exporting of agriculture products created 841,000 full time jobs. So the advantages of keeping the agriculture programs would outweigh the disadvantages of keeping them.
