Christmas is nearly upon us and it's time to relax and start getting into the festive spirit. This is the time when people start to forget about the amount of food and drink they are putting away, but remember, in a few days you will be panicking about the weight you have put on.

On average men consume 6,000 calories just on Christmas day! This is equivalent to eating 42 bananas or 24 hamburgers. It's also the same calorific intake that Arctic explorers consume every day, but they are walking 35 miles a day in -20 degrees, and you will probably be walking 35 steps and sat in front of a roaring fire. So how can you make the festive period enjoyable without spending the whole of January depressed and in the gym or dieting 7 days a week? A sobering thought: most men put on at least 2kg in weight over the Christmas period.

To put this into perspective, to burn off the extra food you have consumed on Christmas day alone you would need to either: • Jog at 7mph for nearly 11 hours • Cycle hard and up hill for over 7 hours • Play basketball for 8 hours • Swim for nearly 9 hours

A few tips: make sure you have plenty of veg with your Christmas dinner, have cream instead of brandy butter with your Christmas pudding, dry roast the roast potatoes rather than cooking them in loads of fat or turkey juices. Other calorie savers are not eating the skin on the turkey, and don't put butter on your vegetables.

Cooking foods in the fat from the meat will always add calories to the meal, always try and cook the potatoes in a separate backing tray and raise the meat up from the base of the backing tray, you will find the meat will cook more evenly this way as well.

Dry roasting the veg will actual enhance the flavour as you get those lovely crispy edges, and when boiling veg you can often lose the vitamins and taste, most people always over boil veg, remember it needs to have a bit of crunch.

But of course Christmas comes but once a year and most men just want to have a blow out and then worry about the weight they have put on in the new year, so let your conscience guide you this Christmas and most of all - have a great time!
