How To Blog - Keyword Research [Part 2 of 5]

by Kyle Arrington

Ok, keyword research. Do get overwhelmed by the idea of keyword research?

Mine does at times, but what keeps me doing it is knowing that I'm blogging about stuff people are actually searching for.

Everyone is very different and we don't want to blog about something only WE are interested in.

So after we have decided to blog about the end in mind, we are going to take that idea and visit Google's external keyword tool.

Oh and by the way, Google is getting rid of this keyword tool and it will be replaced with it's Adword's keyword tool. An Adword's account is free, you just need a gmail account to sign up.

Another way to do keyword research is with Market Samurai. It's a little trickier but gives great data if you are willing to sit down and learn it.

When searching for keywords, think about the end you have in mind and who you want to attract.

When people "Google It"…. what is their intent? After training, I decided my keyword phrase would be "How To Blog". This is a perfect keyword phrase for me because it has low competition, 16.6 Million people in the US are searching for it (that's a lot of people) and it is very relevant to what I'm promoting.

How to blog says, "I'm lost, I'm staring at a blank screen, help me"

No offense, I was there at one point too.

What I just described was the searchers intent.

If the keyword was, "Where to buy a blog", that clearly states their intent is to buy a blog. That is called a buying keyword. Look up buying keywords in Google's keyword tool, you will find the competition to be HIGH.

The competition is high for buying keywords because the advertisers want to make money and they are catching people with their credit card in hand.

If the keyword is, "free blog", their intent is to find something for free and you really don't want to deal with them.

Some keywords are not going to be as obvious, if you are not sure, you can take the keyword from the keyword tool and "Google it" to see what populates.

The search results will tell you what Google knows people are searching for. If there are a lot of ads, that means people buy things when searching for that keyword phrase.

When you are doing your keyword research, know that the majority is not going to have 16.6 million people looking for it. It will be more like in the low thousands. If it is any lower than 1,000 it may not be worth your time.
