Competency Models
Before employees pursue a management position in their company, they may want to talk to a member of management about their competency management system. Though the management system of competency should be common knowledge for those who want to excel in their craft, the person who is trying to go to the next level may need to ask if it applies to their organization.
While the models of competency are becoming the norm in many large organizations, they can differ greatly from one company to another and from one operation to another. Therefore, if the person is serious about entering into management, they should make sure that they know how to prepare themselves for the move. For instance, the competency models in their present organization may have a long list of competencies that must be met. So, it is important for the individual to know how their skills will be assessed and what they will need to work on prior to submitting an application for a management.
In many cases, the model of competency for a management position can be very similar from one organization in the company to another. However, they may differ in several areas if the manager has to lead technical staff. When this is the case, the manager may have numerous technical competencies that they will need to acquire or work on before they are ready for these types of positions. For instance, a technical manager has a wide diversity of model of competency criterion on their lists including organization structure and design, procurement and business case development. All of which involves making sure the teams that they manage have the right financing for the projects that they are working on, understanding how these projects will ultimately affect the balance sheet, and protecting the profits that these systems generate.
A technical manager will need to know when a project should be discontinued since the total cost can outweigh the benefits of a new design. Sometimes the manager will be tasked with completely restructuring their organization for the purposes of efficiency. So, they may need to know when they will have to reduce headcount and when a reduction in headcount will severely compromise open projects. In some cases, an IT manager will have to fight to keep their resources, and the only way to do this is to show upper management how certain automated systems will pay for them over a period of time. With this being said, a technical manager must well-versed in influencing and motivating their employees as part of the standard competencies. However, the skills that they acquire must keep whole operations going financially. If the manager does not have the right skills doing critical economic times and staff reductions, whole operations may suffer. So, competency models are much required to check the efficiency of the staff.
