Understanding How Car Title Loans Can Fit Into Your Financial Picture

by Malinda Starner

One of the saddest realities about our financial system is that it makes it very difficult for the people who need loans the most to be able to get them. It is those people who have little money available and no one to turn to for help who can truly find themselves in desperate need of a way to borrow money fast in the event of an emergency. Fortunately, there are some special types of lending that are available to almost anyone. One of these is auto title loans.

The reason that car title loans are available to people who might not be able to get money through other forms of lending is that they are secured by the title to the car. This means that, by taking the loan, you are signing an agreement which allows the company that is lending you the money to repossess your car if you do not make the payments as agreed. It is because lenders know that they have the option of recovering their money by taking the car that they are willing to offer loans to people that they would otherwise turn away.

If you want to qualify for a car title loan, you will have to own the title to your car outright. That means that you can not still be in the process of paying off a car loan. There also can not be any existing liens against the vehicle. You will also most likely be required to prove that the car is fully insured. From the perspective of a lender, they do not want to have to worry that you will get into a car accident and decide that you might as well stop making payments since the car is now worthless to you anyway.

The process of getting money through car title loans is very quick and simple as borrowing money goes. In fact, you can often get through the entire process over the Internet in just 15 minutes. It is unlikely that the loan company will bother to go to the trouble or expense of checking on things like your credit history. They assume that most of their customers do have troubled credit histories, because most people would prefer to use some other form of borrowing when possible. They know that they have protection against a default, but they do typically charge higher interest rates than more mainstream lenders due to the increased risk that it will happen.

If you have to take out auto title loans, keep in mind that this is really only suitable as a short term form of financing. They generally do not give you a very long period of time before you are expected to repay the money, though you do have the option of rolling it over into a new loan a limited number of times in order to extend the repayment period. You can also typically expect that, even if the company ends up repossessing the car, you will get an additional 30 days to catch up on your payments and recover the vehicle.

This is not the cheapest way to borrow money, but it is one that is available to many people who would otherwise be left with nowhere to turn in an emergency. One of these loans can be very beneficial if you use it wisely and only for emergencies.
