Arranging A Loved One's Funeral Service

by Alan Redman

Whether down to ill health, aging or unexpectedly, losing someone that we love can be devastating and if no arrangements have been made the very thought of having to arrange their funeral can seem overwhelming.

Not only will need to choose a service that we think our loved one would have wanted but we also have to oversee matters such as arranging flowers, organising invitations and choosing hymns and music to be played. If you have decided to hold a wake at the family home for people to gather and pay their respects then both food and drink will also need to be organised.

With so much to do the help of close relatives and friends is essential. You may well have to ask their advice when it comes to which kind of service the deceased would have preferred. If money is a problem and the deceased has left nothing to cover the service then you may need to look at cremation as a cheaper alternative to burial.

The first step in making funeral arrangements is getting in touch with a local funeral home. The funeral director will be able to explain to you what services are on offer and what is involved. They can also discuss costs of the services and how these costs can be paid.

Once the kind of service has been agreed upon it will be time to set a date and time for the service. The earliest this is established the better as it will then allow you time to send invitations and perhaps place an advert in the local paper. Remember that if the service is to be held on a week day then people may need to take time off work so the more notice they get of the service the better.

Family members and close friends will be asked by the funeral director what their preferred choice of songs and hymns are. This may well come down to the deceased personal choice or can be chosen by the remaining members of the family.

Speeches can also be made at the service and once again it will be down to the family to decide on who will be making speeches and when.

Although there is a lot to organise for someone's funeral the help of your local funeral home is essential and with their expertise you can take a step back and mourn with other relatives rather than have the responsibility, both mentally and financially, of having to arrange a loved one's service.
