Physical Therapy: Bouncing Back After Surgery

by Dean McIntyre

When the stressful stage of surgery is over, some individuals are able to bounce back to their normal lives, but others discover it more tough to do so. Although their surgical treatment succeeded, they may still be experiencing some pain and discomfort. Thankfully, most of these aches and pains, frequently characterized by stiffness of joints and/or muscle discomfort, can be fixed by participating in physical therapy. Depending on the nature of your condition, it can easily take anywhere from a few treatments to months of treatment before you can easily consider yourself good as new.

If you went through surgical treatment because of an auto accident, or an injury produced by sports or even an easy home activity, chances are you will require physical therapy to help your body restore its strength. Through a series of activities especially created to help your particular issue, you will slowly but certainly find yourself recovering the way nature intended it to be. Your treatment sessions may include different exercises, use of machines, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hot or cold packs, and massages. If you are struggling with a sore back for instance, you will certainly be assisted by your therapist in performing special exercises and movements to help alleviate the discomfort. Often traction is required, therefore, the use of a machine. As you undergo each motion, you can picture your body gradually building up and recovering from its health problem.

Your physical therapy sessions may even consist of direction on how to get out of bed, ways to use your wheelchair, or whatever prosthetics that you may need to use. The goal is to achieve complete mobility, and the capability to function normally; preferably, the way you were prior to your surgery. It can work wonders for some in a minimal amount of time. Nevertheless, it might take longer for others, especially if the surgery was more serious, and if the person is older.

It is still reassuring to know that through physical therapy, it is possible to regain the strength and control of your body. With a little sacrifice and persistence, even those who were initially disabled can perhaps return to their previous state. Also after recommended treatments, home programs can be created for the patient to follow in your home. It can take a significant amount of discipline, a load of persistence and willpower, and the will to get well. With all these components, the road to getting better is going to be clearer and nearer.
