Salad Days! Don't Forget The Extra Virgin

by David Frank

One irritating thing for the multi-million dollar health industry is that research is continually revealing low cost products that have been available for decades and which are often as good - or better - than expensive health supplements. Furthermore, advanced media related portals have made health so much more accessible to the general public, especially at the basic every day, do-it-yourself level. Coming to that, let us take a look at one very common disease, and the importance and role of a simple every day ingredient in its prevention.

What is Alzheimer's disease? Alzheimer's is a very common form of dementia and it is usually diagnosed in individuals above the age of 65. The symptoms of this disease often tend to delay the diagnosis because they are often just confused with being age-related problems. The symptoms include loss of memory that often gets in the way of one's everyday life and activities, loss of ability for evaluating and solving puzzles and small problems, sudden confusion or loss of memory when it comes to speech and writing, spatial and time-related activities, dramatic change in moods and behaviour, difficulty in completing every day mundane and routine tasks and finally, withdrawal from social activity. This disease can progress undiagnosed in patients for a long time and very often, patients have a life expectancy of around 7 to 10 years after diagnosis or once the disease's presence is detected. Alzheimer's, being degenerative, often puts the patient at the mercy of his or her relatives for care and support. The diagnosis for this disease is usually done by evaluating the individual's behaviour, thinking abilities and skills through tests, which is then followed by a brain scan.

So why does Alzheimer's occur? Alzheimer's disease has been said to occur by scientists and medical researchers because of an accumulation of beta-amyloid and tau proteins in the brain. This accentuates the formation of neurofibrillary tangles in nerve cells. As a result, the communication between the neurons is hampered, soon followed by the death of these cells.

However recent scientific research at the University of Louisiana shows that extra virgin olive oil contains a compound which has brain protective attributres. This discovery arose from both testube and libe studies This breakthrough research is of great importance in the scientific and medical battle against Alzheimer's. The findings of the research team were published in February 2013. It is now said that the consumption of extra virgin olive oil can significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease in elderly individuals can help decrease the collection of beta-amyloid in the brain.llection of beta-amyloid in the brain.

Alzheimer's is a deadly disease and this research has made a very important contribution to the various battles against the disease at so many levels, including the scientific, medical, and even at the personal and emotional levels. Since, this disease is a difficult and traumatic condition for patients and their loved ones, the emotional relief and happiness the recent medical findings bring along cannot be put down in monetary terms.
