How To Survive Being Locked In The Office

It could happen...

by Sam Qam

With most offices these days having coded entry systems, or swipe cards or even concierge teams it may seem like an impossible scenario for someone to be stranded in their office for any length of time. Especially as you probably have a mobile phone and your office is full of phones any way so how could this situation ever arise. Well this is just the situation the word 'hypothetical' was invented for...

So you've been working late, your phone is out of battery, the phone system is down for maintenance and the concierge team got their shifts mixed up so there is no one in the building and the last person locked you in when they left an hour ago. Once you have established that you are stuck you can start to think what you can do to make sure you survive this terrible predicament.

Send a message

In an attempt to try and get someone's attention that might be able to help you, why not try creating a message out of post-its positioned across several windows to read 'Help! Trapped Inside!'. Alternatively you could try posting some each catching messages out of your front door our out of a high window.

Source some food

You will have had your lunch a few hours ago so you will need to think about getting some food. Hopefully your office will have a fridge for people to keep their lunches in. If you're lucky you will find lurking in amongst the various plastic bags and dubious looking sandwich boxes, something that is edible. If you can't find any food, you should be able to survive on water from a drinks fountain and biscuits saved for tea breaks. If you don't even have that, you may want to consider breaking a window.

Make a den

If you accept that you are going to be stuck in the office over the weekend you may as well make yourself comfortable. First of all, try to find the warmest place in the building as the heating may be turned off. Next create a bed area either out of soft seating or from stationery. If you are office stationery supplier then you probably know where all the best stuff is anyhow. You can create a relatively soft mattress using crumpled paper or bubble wrap if you can find enough.

Hopefully this won't happen to you, but if it does then at least now you have some ideas for how to survive. Above all, don't panic, its only two days and hopefully someone will miss you enough to come looking.
