Eight Reasons Why I Choose To Work From Home
I am sitting on an early morning train to London. Its December so naturally its dark and cold. I can think of many places I would rather be and it got me thinking about all the benefits of working from home.
Here are my top ten reasons why working from home knocks the socks of having a day job.
1. No Commuting
Unless you have meetings you don't really need to leave the house. In a previous life I was spending up to three hours a day travelling to and from work. Do the maths and that equate to about one month out of every year spent travelling - now that's got to be the biggest waste of precious time ever. Working from home gives you hours back in your day to use constructively.
2. Time Is Yours To Do As You Wish
Now I don't advocate sitting on the couch and watching TV all day and I certainly encourage anyone who has a work from home business to constructively plan their day with meaningful tasks, However your day is yours to plan and if there are certain activities that you want to fit in like your children's school concert then you can work around those. Working from home gives you the freedom of choice.
3. Be Your Own Boss
A bigger responsibility than it sounds but working from home allows you to be your own boss. No more watching over your back when you Google the news or take an unscheduled coffee break. It allows you to grow as a person and transform yourself into a better person with more responsibility. Beware however that it does require discipline to be your own boss.
4. The Buck Stops With You
Some people think of this as a negative but for me having the responsibility of 'what I put in I get out' and knowing that each decision I make becomes my responsibility no matter the consequences. For years I relied on too many people to make important decision and I would feel those consequences regardless of whether I agreed or not. Working from home allows you to be in more control of your destiny.
5. Spend More Time With Family
Even if it's just for an hour during the day that one hour more time with your family than you would normally spend. It's also gratifying to know that when you do pop for a coffee break you can see your family. Family is the cornerstone of my life and too me it's so important to be apart of that family and not someone who breezes in and out to sleep!
6. Exercise More
I live in a lovely part of the world where I have some incredible 'running' routes. One of the perks for working from home is that I get to go for a run a few times a week in these surrounding. I have spent many running between crowds avoiding traffic and as exercise is such a big part of my life I know where I would like to be training. For the record doing at least a few hours of exercise a week is vitally important to keep a good lifestyle balance.
7. Save Money On Travel and Condiments
Working from home saves me a fair chunk of change compared to working in 'the city'. For me personally it use to cost me close to £700 to travel to work and but my lunch. Working from home almost negates this cost.
8. Job Security
Admittedly some people make it a personal choice to work for a boss and take away the responsibilities of having your own business. That's their choice but in this day and age the number one reason people choose to do that is job security. To this I say 'have you been reading the papers lately?' The only job security I know is the one I have in my own business. I can't get fired from my own job!
These are just eight reasons why working from home works for me. I understand that not everyone will share my views but it does give me a sense of believing reading through these eight points. Personally I am a lot happier working from home although I have to admit it's not easy. Saying that I work very hard and I am in control of my destiny.
