Facing The Challenges Of An Outdoor Living Space

by Stewart Wrighter

Those who decide that creating an outdoor living space is a good idea will likely not regret their decision. Outdoor spaces allow you to increase your living space without the expense of a home addition or moving to a larger house. Your family will be able to get together and indoor outdoor recreation without even leaving your own property. You will also be able to entertain in a space that allows people to spread out and enjoy activities like bean bag toss, badminton and possibly even swimming. Having an outdoor living space is a great way to improve your quality of life, but it comes with challenges. Many of the problems are simply annoyances, but if you can take care of them, you will create an even more pleasant outdoor space. Start by eliminating pests in the area. Contact an exterminator or mosquito control expert to take care of spraying for bugs in your outdoor living space.

In addition to bugs, there are other pests your outdoor space may include. Small animals and rodents like raccoons, squirrels and mice can wreak havoc in your living space both indoors and out. The same goes for stray cats coming into your yard and using it as if were a litter box. Put up deterrents in your yard to keep these pests at bay. Planting strongly scented flowers like marigolds is often enough to repel them. You can also sprinkle moth balls in the area to alleviate the problem.

When living outdoors, you are giving up some of your privacy. While you can plant hedges and install high fences, it still may not give you total privacy. In your home, you can go into rooms without windows or put up shades to prevent the eyes of strangers from seeing you shower, change clothing or do other private things. Remember that when you are outdoors, no method of blocking the eyes of strangers is full-proof, so engage in behavior carefully.

Your outdoor space is likely to be exposed to the elements. There are a number of things you can do, including the use of a tent or screened room, but you will still be more vulnerable outdoors than you would be in. In many ways, this exposure helps make the outdoor space more pleasant. However, you will still want to come up with a method of protection for when the elements are extreme.

Finally, remember to keep your outdoor area as safe as possible, but realize that having living arrangements outdoors is a security risk. One, you are keeping furniture and other items outside. You will not want to bring large pieces of furniture indoors when you are not using them, so understand there is some risk of burglary involved. You should also be aware of your surroundings when using the outdoor space. You are on your own property, so you are inclined to feel safe, but remember you are not able to lock yourself in. If you are outdoors, you are vulnerable, so pay attention to what goes on and have a back-up plan should you be threatened.
