Moreover, half of all Green Flag's roadside callouts are due to breakdowns caused by the wintry weather.

Being unlucky enough to experience the death of a car in winter means you have to fork out for a new car on the brink of the most expensive part of the year - Christmas. Obviously, when buying a used car in winter there are a few extra little checks you must do before venturing out onto icy roads. Here are some checks to ensure that your used car is prepared for the worst of the wintry conditions:

Tyres

In icy weather the slippery roads can be the cause of tragic accidents. To avoid any incidents always prepare your tyres thoroughly before setting out. The regulation for tyre tread is 1.6mm, but in wintry conditions it is advisable to ensure it is above 2.5mm. Ensure the pressure is good and of course that there is a regulation spare wheel in the boot in case of any emergencies.

Battery

Battery failure is a main reason for breakdowns during the winter months. It is good practice to have your battery checked before winter arrives. Garages will often have a battery testing facility to allow owners to check the condition of their battery and is usually free of charge.

Lights

As the nights draw in over the winter months, lights will be needed even when driving in the afternoon. It's important to regularly check your headlights and brake lights regularly as the mixture of dark nights and slippery roads can be a death trap.

Fluid levels

It may sound obvious, but always be sure that you have adequate levels of fuel, oil, screen wash and anti-freeze in the car. Being without these during winter is far more dangerous than in summer.

Breakdown kit

In the worst case scenario of a breakdown it is advisable to have a breakdown kit stored somewhere in your car. You should have a torch, food, warm clothing, water, tools to release your car if stuck and a first aid kit.
