Can a Rhodesian Ridgeback Live in an Apartment?

It is a well established fact that the Rhodesian Ridgeback embodies the perfect mix of yin and yang qualities. Dogs of this breed are naturally hard working dogs but have also adapted to be good pet companions. But given these good qualities, the question of whether the Rhodesian Ridgeback is right for you still remains. In its own terms, you can have a well-behaved dog, but if he or she doesn’t fit your lifestyle, it will never work out. It works the other way around as well in a sense that you can do your best to provide a good home for your dog but if what you have can’t meet its basic demands, it won’t work out either. The primary concern when it comes to having a Rhodesian Ridgeback in a contained environment such as an apartment or condominium is having its exercise demands met. Keep in mind that the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a “high energy” dog. More specifically, they are bred for endurance. This only means that they will need constant exercise in the same manner that people follow routines. The typical Rhodesian Ridgeback would thrive in a home with a large yard to roam around, but this isn’t to say either that having dogs of this breed live in an environment such as an apartment is impossible either. What you can do to make up for this is to take your Rhodesian Ridgeback on regular walks. It may even help to incorporate your pet’s exercise routine into your own personal routine of running errands. Dogs such as Rhodesian Ridgebacks appreciate these kinds of trips as they are very social dogs as well. Not only would you be able to hit two birds with one stone in terms of getting your errands accomplished whilst providing your dog with the exercise that it needs, you’d also be helping your dog develop good social skills as well. Another concern to be dealt with in terms of having a Rhodesian Ridgeback in your apartment involves challenges in housebreaking. However, as mentioned earlier, as long as you are religious about taking your dog out for walks and other exercise activities, this should not be that big of a problem. Taking ownership of a Rhodesian Ridgeback can be a challenge but doing what you can to meet its basic demands can prove that there is nothing more rewarding than having its company.
