What It Means To Have A Paralegal Degree

There are many lawyers out there who are looking for someone with a paralegal degree and who can work for them full-time. Sometimes paralegal professionals also have to do some secretarial work, especially in a small firm. So, if you want to get a profession in the paralegal industry, it might actually be good to get class units both in paralegal degree and in secretarial training. It would mean a lot for lawyers to be able to hire someone who can both be a paralegal and a legal secretary.

Employers require degrees and certifications

You should not be surprised when a prospective employer requires too much proof of your paralegal degree and certification. Most employers would just like to make sure that they are really hiring someone who has already gained the necessary degrees and certifications. Its either they will require you to have a two-year technical degree or a full-blown four-year bachelor's degree. Some multinational companies are even strict enough to expect you to have a master's degree or at least, further training in the paralegal program.

When hiring a paralegal, employees will also check whether the institution or college you received your training from is accredited by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). The association has established standards of certification that will require a paralegal to have a bachelor's degree and an equal number of experiences. Being able to meet such requirements will allow you to take a two-day exam (given three times a year) that when you pass, will earn you the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) certification. Of course, once you have this certification, more employers will be interested in you.

If you want to have the Registered Paralegal (RP) designation, you can also take the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam administered by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations. They offer such examinations to paralegals with a bachelor's degree and at least two years of experience in the industry. Once you are able to use the RP designation, then more and more prospective employers will be interested in your curriculum vitae. At any given time, someone with a paralegal degree and other certifications is more probable to be hired than those who simply went through a week-long training program.

There are also paralegal ethical associations that govern the acts of paralegals. You have to abide by the rules and regulations of the association especially if you are a member of it. A few state administrations, the National Association of Legal Assistants and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations are the groups administering such ethical and unethical acts. Those who do not follow the guidelines set by the associations can receive sanctions and other kinds of penalties.
