Mobile Traffic Goes Up 125%, However Conversions Are Behind Desktop

by peter zmijewski

It is no hidden secret that the mobile usage has increased, plus brands are going through more and more visits to the site from mobile devices including smartphones and tablets. But would they be converting.

From a recent report, data had shown mobile traffic to sites up 125 percent since 2012, however particular industries are seeing more traffic plus conversions from mobile users as compared to others.

Sectors have been shown specifically that have had significant growth for mobile traffic as compared to desktop. Topping charts would be software and technology, financial services plus the real estate sectors.

However, when it would come to conversions, smartphone users would not be converting at a similar rate compared to desktop users. Mobile users converted at one-third of the rate of desktop users as a whole, according to this study. However, tablet users had converted at about the same rate as desktop.

Marketers have an understanding for a few years that they require mobile sites to take advantage of mobile traffic explosion, but a lot have existing sites that were not created for a smaller screen and would not take into account user experience for mobile vs desktop vs tablet. Every device would be unique in how consumers would interact plus engage, and marketing activities have to reflect this. Leaders would take time to come up with responsive web sites.

One recommendation would be capitalizing on opportunity which is missed in mobile traffic through making sure sites would be following best practices for mobile optimization, including Google’s guidelines for mobile. Marketers have to perform a better job in the addressing of the user experience for smartphones. We also recommend paying good attention to common mistakes including smartphone only 404s plus featuring app download messages that could disrupt the user experience for visitors to the page.

It would be interesting to note that media plus entertainment sites converted better with smartphone users as opposed to desktop. Conversion rates had gone past desktop at a rate of 1.6x for those categories. In particular, sites in the travel and hospitality industry together with ecommerce possess above-average conversions as compared to desktop.

A strong correlation was found between the presence of video plus multimedia content plus conversion. Plus the brands optimizing the sites for smartphones have to seriously consider hosting video content, ensuring that they are following the guidelines of Google for video inclusion.

Media and entertainment sites would be centered around video plus long form content. A lot of brands in the industry have learned how to optimize assets for mobile, which would include formatting the articles so that the reading experience would feel natural using a smartphone.

An optimal experience would encourage people to stay on smartphones to consume articles rather than switch to tablet or desktop – this would drive conversions on mobile beyond what has been typically seen across other industries.

The report would track the impact of mobile across 6,000 of the customers, plus web traffic for around 5 billion pages to quantify how smartphones plus tablets would compare with desktop for traffic and conversion.

So with desktop PPC still making a strong impact, you still need to rely on keyword research tools for your data. For this we recommend KeywordSpy, which is always accurate in its indexing of PPC and organic data. Keep ahead in your conversion numbers and get this tool while you can!
