Tips on Setting up a Model Train -- Starting from Scratch
When your looking to set up your model railroad from scratch, it's important to start out with the right equipment.
Model railroading like many hobbies has a wide variety of equipment available for purchase.
As with most products we purchase on a daily basis, quality and price go hand and hand. The model railroad hobby is much the same.
To get the best results from the start, figure out what you want to get out of your train set.
Is this going to be for your child?
You may not be sure yet, if He/She will pick up a serious interest in this hobby. You probably aren't looking to spend a ton of money on a hobby your child might lose interest in.
Are you a serious model railroader?
If so you won't want to purchase a toy train set. For the serious hobbyist buying the right equipment is critical to the operation, and overall appearance of your set.
Whatever category you fall into, you can go to your hobby store and know what type of equipment to buy. It helps to have an overall budget thought out before heading out.
When purchasing new train equipment for the first time it's better to go with shorter locomotives and freight cars. This is because most tracks come with 18 inch curves. With this type of track the longer pieces tend to look awkward and can derail much easier.
When choosing your locomotive it's a good idea to stick with a diesel one. The steam engines have more wheels and tend to be much longer.
Be willing to spend some extra money when it comes to the locomotive. Some important features to look for are the weight (metal frame and wheels), a good electric motor, and at least one flywheel at one or both ends of the motor.
Otherwise the performance will suffer and you might have to push start it from time to time.
As for the freight cars and other rolling stock, it's a good idea to stick to the ones with metal wheels. The better ones are also much more realistic looking.
Unless your setting up a larger track with wider turns stay away from passenger cars as they are too long in length and can derail fairly easy.
It's easy to find whatever you're looking for, as the model train supply options are many.
Whether you are discovering model trains because of your child or you're serious about the hobby, take your time at the hobby store. Try out all the accessories you want.
Most of them have a test track available. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. You can prevent many problems in advance by taking the time to ask.
Depending on the hobby store you visit, they sometimes will let you try a piece before you buy it.
Hopefully this information can make your experience better.
No matter what your age, model railroading is a great hobby.
Enjoy your time with it and good luck!
