3-phase motor and how to check if its working

There are quite few different AC motor types, each one with different operating and mechanical characteristics. The one of the common type though is the -so called- squirrel cage rotor. It is called squirrel-cage, because it's rotor looks like the exercising wheel found in squirrel or hamster cages. A typical 3-phase squirrel-cage motor has six connection leads in the electrical connection box for the three coils. If someone works with AC 3-phase motors, therefore it is important to know how to connect these motors in Star and Delta connection, and how to detect an electrical problem in the unit. <br />The problems can be easily detected. Just make sure that you need to have a keen eye and a good memory. <br /><br />• Broken coil (infinite coil resistance)<br />• Short-circuited coil (less than normal or zero coil resistance)<br />• Leaking coil to ground (current leaking from one coil to ground/neutral)<br />• Two or more coils short-circuited with each other (current leaking from one coil to another coil)<br /><br /> <br />According to wikihow. If the motor has any of the following problems on the outside, they may be problems that can shorten the life of the motor due to previous overloading, wrong application or both. <br />Check the nameplate on the motor. nameplate is a metal or other durable tag or label that is riveted or affixed to the outside of motor housing called the stator frame.<br /><br />Important information about the motor is on the label; without it, it will be difficult to determine its suitability to a task. Typical information found on most motors include <br />Do no forget to check the bearing because it would be useful then Begin to check the bearings of the motor. Many electric motor failures are caused by bearing failures. The bearings allow the shaft or rotor assembly to turn freely and smoothly in the frame. Bearings are located at both ends of the motor which are sometimes called bell housings or end bells. <br /><br />Also you wouldn’t forget to Check the windings for short circuiting to the frame. Most household appliance motors with a shorted winding will not run and will probably open the fuse or trip the circuit breaker instantly (600 volt systems are "ungrounded," so a 600 volt motor with a shorted winding may run and not trip a fuse or circuit breaker).<br /><br />If there is still problem in the unit don’t hesitate to call a local electrician to help you with these situations.
