10 tips to work from home

by Erik Skillern

So, you're thinking about working from home. You're fed up with the corporate world, your commute is too long, your work is not appreciated, or you simply want to spend more time with your family. Join the millions of people who work from home. But, before you make the jump to the "self-employed," you need to find an opportunity that will satisfy your needs.

1. Establish and list your reasons for wanting to work at home. From this list, identify the characteristics of a practical opportunity. For example, are there any limitations on the hours you can work, or the geographical area your business can cover? How much space can you allocate to your work area? Will you have quiet and privacy to effectively work on your business?

2. Evaluate your strengths and skills. What are you good at? Do you have any hobbies that could be converted into a business?

3. Evaluate the marketplace in your community. Are there any needs in the community that are not being met? Are there any services or products you could provide that are not at this time available?

4. Calculate the amount of funds you have available for the business. Assume that you will not receive income from this business for at least one year, so withhold at least one year of living costs from the amount of cash you have available.

5. Research-Explore-Examine. Spend time on the Internet, reading newspapers, and talking to people. Find out what is out there. Use networking resources such as newsgroups, forums, etc.

6. Make a decision. Choose what type of business you would like to start.

7. Start Slowly. If possible, start your new business before you give up your day job. Make sure you enjoy it, and confirm that it has possibilities.

8. There are certain tax advantages to working from home. Check with your accountant or tax professional.

9. Maintain regular work hours. Avoid the potential distractions of home.

10. Webcam modeling is a great way to work from home and make excellent money
