Ok, now this is a question on the minds of many especially those who may be coming of age, so to speak. Statistics show that an alarming number of teenaged girls are engaging in casual oral sex with multiple partners in an attempt to remain virgins. Oral sex has been practiced for centuries, but is it safe? More importantly, can oral sex cause some long term health problems? The answer may surprise you.

While we have all heard of problems that can arise from engaging in conventional sex, there may be some you have never heard of regarding oral sex. So, here is a list of some common ailments that can arise if you are considering having oral sex with anyone. Herpes. We have all heard of this disease. If you haven't, you may have been been living under a rock.

. Herpes is unique due to the fact that once it infects the body, it doesn't leave. This means that once you get herpes, you have it for life. Some of the symptoms of herpes are lesions on the skin especially around the genitals. It can also produce lesions on the anus, between your thighs and anywhere around the rectum. Tests for herpes are given in the form of a swab of the urine or semen of the patient.

Chlamydia

This disease associated with oral sex can, left untreated, cause long term irreversible damage to the female reproductive system. Chlamydia is often referred to as a silent disease because it shows no major symptoms. Symptoms of Chlamydia do exist however in the form of burning sensations when urinating, abnormal menstrual cycles in women, swelling of testicles in men and abdominal pain. This disease is treated with antibiotics and medical advice should be sought immediately if symptoms arise.

Gonorrhea

This is yet another disease that can be contracted through oral sex. Gonorrhea is a disease that not only affects the genitals but can also cause significant damage to the eyes, throat and joints of a person affected. Like other sexually transmitted diseases, Gonorrhea symptoms include burning sensations in the groin area, swelling and discharge of pus. Additional symptoms include pain in the throat when swallowing and pain when urinating. The good news is this condition is successfully treated with antibiotics. Hepatitis. This is a condition that can prove to be potentially fatal. BE CAREFUL!

Hepatitis virus 1,2 and 3

These are transmitted commonly through oral sex which involves a swelling or (inflammation) of the liver. Left without treatment hepatitis can cause irreversible damage to the liver and possible death. Symptoms also include jaundice (yellowing of the eyes), vomiting and loss of appetite.

These are just a few of the diseases that can be contracted through oral sex. The best advice for anyone who has had or is considering having oral sex is to limit this type of behavior to a single partner. If you are having oral sex with multiple partners, it is advised to have him wear a condom whenever possible. Your health depends on it! With this said, it's also advised to attend a sex education course if you are wondering if what you are doing is subjecting you to possible STD's or HIV/AIDS.

The best course of action as always is to practice safe sex and limit your sexual partners. It's not like the good old days anymore. To your happiness and continued sexual health!
