Differences between Stains and Dyes
Dyes and Stains both are the coloring agents used on a wooden surface to enhance various customized color applications. A wide array of stains & dyes are in use. As per properties & functionalities, both are almost holding much similarity except minor undistinguishable dissimilarities. Yet, there is a thin line of distinction between the properties and post-application performance to both. Likewise in composition, both dyes and stains consist of pigment, solvent and resin or binder. The colorant in their formulation carries a significant difference. Features of Stains Stains are solid &unsolvable particles made probably of pigments& can be mixed with water, oil or other mineral spirits. The colorant would momentarily settle down in a solvent; hence pigment would remain undissolved. Eventually, these particles would turn into a big & solid globular collection; submerging to the bottom of the container. Thus, a can of stains needs to be stirred before an application. That is why stains are likely to stay on the surface of the wood and stick to the pores only. Features of Dyes Unlike stains, dyes are smaller particles. Though insolvable in nature, dyes are well soluble with specific liquid. Solvents such as turpentine, lacquer thinner and many are favorable with powdered dyes. When added with such liquids, they become dissolved and never settle down at the bottom of the container. Dyes are thicker paints than stains. Unlike stains, dyes comprise less amounts of pigments & solvent and due to their tiny structural nature, they go through the surface of the wood deeply; often removing the use of binders. Popularity of Applications for Stains & Dyes Again, the likelihood of more usage of either stains or dyes would completely depend upon a sort of end-result the wooden surface achieves. Stains have always been more in use, but their tendency of being left behind as a hard mass would sometimes leave an unpleasant adhesion to the wooden area; deteriorating the beauty of wood grains. As the dye of being more translucent, the wood grains would enhance more pleasant appearances. The large molecules of stains have higher protectivity as against the light; thus more surface permanence is allowed. On being exposed to light, dyes, whether oil soluble dyes or water based dyes, are more susceptible in losing a grip from the surfaces; and though having been accepted for much ultraviolet resistance while an interior use, dyes are not appropriate for a much more exposed external application. Types of Applications of Stains & Dyes The water-based dyes would probably lift the grains of wood more quickly; a certain step such as sanding the wood first and then moisturizing it to have the raised grains is more positive. Wipe out the surface by using the wet rag. After the proper grain raising & drying, sand the wood with the sandpaper; make sure the wooden surface is dried thoroughly. Then, apply the water-based dye; most probably grains of wood would not rise again. Now a lovely appearance is much largely expected. Parallely, be quicker in applying dyes as alcohol-based dye would leave marks on the surface faster than water-based dyes. The wiping techniques may also leave a very impressive contrast to the wood grains. More contrast is attained as pigments in stains are thicker than those in dyes; thus leaving the dyes with more possible results of less contrast. Although any sort of brush goes well with all stains and dyes, foam brushes have more accurate impacts on dyes than stains. Furthermore, stains and dyes are utilized in a great combination with each other to enhance a desirable color output, to increase further deepness in carvings and to hide surface lines even with dissimilar wooden platforms.
