2. Only use cold water when grinding your food up in the disposal. The reason is that if there are any fats in the foods you grind up, they could melt in hot water, traveling through the pipes while cooling and eventually thickening, causing a clog. 3. Don't ever use any chemicals such as drain cleaners or bleach in the garbage disposal as they may hurt it or lessen its operational abilities, not to mention taint the environment eventually.

3. Never put prepared or raw rice or pasta in the garbage disposal much less egg shells, coffee grounds, bones or fibrous vegetables and other foods. These can diminish the operating capacity of the apparatus.

If something gets trapped in your garbage disposal, under no circumstances use your fingers to take out the item as the blades could harm you. Instead, use a pair of tongs to get hold of the item when possible. If your garbage disposal starts smelling less than fresh, cut up a portion of lemon and feed it down the drain while the warm water is running. Or, you can chop up a few ice cubes alongside rock salt and baking soda while running the water. Either strategy should reduce the effects of the odors from the disposal.
