How to Burn Fat After Fifty

by Suzanne Andrews

For years we've been bombarded with different exercise and fat burning diet programs claiming to be effective, promising to work like magic for every age group and all described as being "easy" to do.

Well, balderdash. You're over fifty now and you need a system or program designed just for you with your age and your body's limitations in mind. One type of fat burning exercise to keep in mind is called (aerobic) cardio. Cardio includes walking at a brisk pace, swimming, biking, running, and dancing. Running, although cardiovascular in nature, can damage your knees, so choose wisely. The key is to choose something you enjoy doing and do it consistently. You don't have to do a six week boot camp, just 30 minutes a day of low impact cardiovascular exercise at a pace that elevates your heart rate but doesn't make you faint is ideal. You might be saying to yourself, but I feel fine. If you're over fifty and don't exercise, you are putting yourself at a higher risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and type II diabetes.

Regular cardio exercises are an efficient tool for reducing and even preventing all of these ailments that at the very least are a huge pain in the neck. Wouldn't it be great to climb up a flight of steps without feeling like you just hiked over a mountain range? Cardio exercise will do that for you. It's also fantastic for increasing your endurance so that even the most mundane daily activities like putting the grandkids in and out of the car can be done with greater ease.

Oh, and did I mention you'll burn a ton of fatty calories? You know that spare tire or extra thigh that just won't go away? Well, watch them slowly melt away because when you burn calories you are not allowing lipid molecules (fats) to be absorbed into your body where they can build up over time and become the floatation device known as your midsection or butt. That is, you'll be burning fat off of all of you because you can't spot train a part of your body to just cut away fat there. It burns off wherever there is excess.

It's key to be realistic about exercising. You are not going to look like a bodybuilder by doing the simple exercises we advocate here. But you will be healthier and more flexible which will allow you to have more endurance to do things you thought you never could and feel better than most other people your age who don't exercise. Remember, we're talking about being functional for daily activities, not entering competitive events unless you believe life is a competative event where only the strong and fit survive the longest. Be strong, be fit and survive.
