by David Tatham

As with any financial investment or asset, making use of drawings for financial gain needs to be carefully researched. If you consider the painting that you wish to purchase, it has often been produced as a result of centuries of culture and inspiration, as is the product of modern society today.

So to avoid rummaging many layers and layers of art literature, it is easier to look at some approximate guidelines.Think of which type of art you enjoy first; this at least adds enjoyment to your work of art which could cost a large amount of money.

An excellent idea to do this is to read through several art books or go to an Art gallery. You can also find out which types of media you prefer, ie. oils, watercolours or pencil drawings for example.Go to a few prestigious Art sites or write to their newsletters. But more importantly it gives one an understanding into the art mechanisms of sales, ie. the desire and rarity. Plus, take note of the price of each artist's recent works of art sold for.

This gives one a good idea into the works resale value.Art is not a fast quick sell get rich asset. So do think of the capital you wish to invest and how long you can wait for the resale of your artwork. If you are unable to wait out that amount of time or do not have the start up money to invest use this time to understand the market and find out more about the subject.

Join art fairs on a regular basis, there is of course a difference between art exhibitions and car boot sales. These are easy to find once you become familiar with art exhibitions and sites pertaining to fine art. A good mind can lead to the aquisition of an art work by an emerging artist which is a great advantage to discover in the early days.Research a little about the artist, this makes the art more interesting and also helps to sell your artwork. All people love the story of Van Gogh and his ear! It is no different today.

Even though well known painters can have famous histories which you may like to know about before purchasing their painting, or particularly interesting stories which you can tell to interested purchasers. For example, where the artist grew up can be interesting.

Finally stay in touch with the artist, ie. keep abreast of new paintings that have been produced, and what has been sold and for how much. As with any asset you have to know prices and availability in the present day. This stands you in a strong postion when deciding to realize your precious investment.
