Cosmetic Surgeon - The Services You Can Expect

by Dr Kourosh Tavakoli

There are many things in life that can contribute to making your life more fulfilling and enjoyable. It is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and ensure that you are comfortable in your own skin. If there is a part of your body that you feel insecure about and which makes you feel less than confident, then it may be the right time to contact a cosmetic surgeon.

A cosmetic surgeon is a medical practitioner who carries out surgeries aimed at enhancing the appearance of your face or body. This means the surgery is conducted on healthy people who are not satisfied with the appearance of a part of their body. There is normally no reason, whether medical or physical, to go through with a cosmetic procedure. However, cosmetic procedures have been known to improve the health of patients because of the resulting boost in self-esteem.

Cosmetic vs plastic surgeon

Just like the cosmetic surgeon, the plastic surgeon is also qualified to carry out cosmetic procedures. The difference between the cosmetic and plastic surgeon is that the plastic surgeon has additional qualifications. A plastic surgeon is trained to carry out reconstructive surgery on abnormal parts of the body. The abnormalities could be due to a birth defect or due to burns or illnesses like cancer, where a body part has to be removed. Reconstructive surgery uses techniques that are quite complex and which are often unnecessary when carrying out cosmetic procedures.

Cosmetic procedures

There is a wide variety of procedures that can be performed by a cosmetic surgeon to enhance your looks. These procedures can be conducted on any part of your body, head or neck. Procedures that can be carried out on your breasts include breast enlargement through the use of implants, breast reduction and breast lift. You can also have procedures carried out on your face including rhinoplasty or a nose job, cheek and chin enhancements that help to improve the shape of your face.

A facelift, necklift, eyelid surgery and brow lift are done to give your face a more youthful look. Procedures done to give you a good body figure include a tummy tuck, a body lift surgery or liposuction. Women who have gone through pregnancy can also have a post pregnancy makeover done.

Safety of cosmetic procedures

The procedures that are carried out by a cosmetic surgeon carry more or less the same risks that are experienced in other surgeries. Scarring, infection and bleeding are all risks associated with cosmetic surgery but are usually not life threatening. However, it is important to get a qualified doctor who will take good care of you and ensure the risks are minimized.

Post-surgery

Usually, you will go through some swelling and bruising after the surgery, and the period of recovery will depend on the intensity of the procedure. Some procedures like the tummy tuck will require you to be hospitalized for a few days since drains are placed under your skin to get rid of excess blood and fluid. Other procedures like labiaplasty are done on an out-patient basis. Your doctor will normally give you instructions on how to take care of yourself during recovery.
