Taking a picture is as easy as pushing a button, but taking a beautiful photograph is a work of art. You can take great photos with a simple, point-and-shoot camera or get lousy shots with the most expensive, top-of-the-line camera. It is not the camera that produces wonderful images, it is the photographer. To help you take great photographs, here are some helpful tips.

Produce black and white photos with more clarity and impact by shooting original pictures in color and converting them to black and white on your computer. Computer image editing software often gives you much more control than your camera's black and white filter.

Take the time to listen to what others think about your pictures. Taking both the positive and the negative criticism is going to make you a better photographer. You may find that things that you did not like are just what others are looking for in a photo that they love.

Use manual white balance to spice up your photos. It is possible to let the camera decide the proper white balance for a given environment, but sometimes the camera will get it wrong and the photo will look washed out. Using a manual white balance also allows you to take artsy photos with sepia tones, for instance.

To shoot vintage-style photos, smear a dab of petroleum jelly on the outer edges of your camera lens (or use a lens filter, if you are worried about greasing up your actual lens). This technique blurs the edges of your shots, providing a fun, distorted look that mimics old-school photography.

Use a good lens to get a better image quality. You can create artistic pictures with any kind of equipment if you work hard and adapt your style to your equipment. But getting a good lens definitely opens up more possibilities. For instance, you can capture more details and get a better focus.

Meeting up and joining with fellow photographers is a great way to hone your craft. Think about it: Everyone meets up in a vocation like this, from cyclists to soccer players. It's only natural that photographers group together. Holding friendly little competitions and exploring the world together can improve your skills.

Learn the apertures of the camera and understand how they are used. The aperture varies the amount of light allowed to travel through the lens which expands and contracts to allow this light to pass through. The more light that is allowed to travel through the lens, more objects in the photo will be in focus. The less light allowed through, the focus will shift to only focusing on objects in the foreground.

Sometimes you need to take a picture of a picture. This can be a bit tricky, especially if it is a digital picture, such as a JPEG. Your camera does come prepared though. Try using your camera's white balance presets to get the best light for these types of images.
