When Christmas approaches, there is no shortage of songs dedicated to the season playing everywhere that you can imagine. With many Christmas songs having been covered numerous times since being written, the televisions series Glee also wanted to add its own unique voice to the classics. 1. "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year"
In season 2, episode 10, "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year" was covered by New Directions. The version covered was from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (covered by Burl Ives) that first aired on December 6th, 1964. However, the song was first written by Johnny Marks based on a 1939 story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
2. "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
Also in season 2, episode 10, of Glee, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" was covered by K.D. Lang. The version covered was from How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, which first aired on December 18th, 1966.
The lyrics were written by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel with the music composed by Albert Hague. Although the song was originally performed by Thurl Ravenscroft, it was mistakenly credited to the narrator, Boris Karloff. However, when Dr. Seuss become aware of the mistake, he apologized to Ravenscroft and made a point of writing many letters to columnists to make sure Ravenscroft was credited.
3. "Last Christmas"
"Last Christmas" by Wham! (released in 1984) was the version covered by fictional characters Finn Hudson and Rachel Berry in season 3, episode 9. Wham! was a British musical duo that included Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael. However, due to naming conflicts with an American band, they were briefly known in America as Wham! UK.
4. "Let It Snow"
Ella Fitzgerald's "Let It Snow" was covered by fictional characters Blaine Anderson and Kurt Hummel in season 3, episode 9. The song was originally written in 1945 by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styn and was believed to have been written on one of the hottest days recorded in Hollywood, California.
5. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"
In season 3, episode 9, of Glee, "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" was covered by fictional characters Noah Puckerman, Finn Hudson, Rachel Berry, Mercedes Jones, Blaine Anderson, and Kurt Hummel. The version covered was by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
The song was written by Haven Gillespie and John Frederick Coots, and first performed over the radio in November of 1934. Coots had originally presented the song to his publisher, but they did not think much of it even despite liking it. However, once he approached Eddie Cantor, he allowed it to be sung during a radio show and it became an instant hit.
