by merlin jonson

If you're just starting out in the job market and are on the hunt for the perfect gig, you will need to prepare to sell yourself on paper. Your skills and assets are important, and they need to be highlighted through a resume. If you're currently a professional ready to change career tracks, an updated resume with new skills should be included. The first step is to make sure you have some kind of word processing software to download a resume template. A professional resume is the key to landing a good job and make you stand out from the rest of the other candidates. Some people would rather go to a professional and pay for a resume package, but you can create one easily with or without a resume template. It's important to include a cover letter with your resume. Your cover letter should be brief and tell why you're a good fit for the job, your interest in the position and what you can bring to the company. It should not be an exact repeat of your resume. Avoid including any salary history or negative connotations about previous employers. Personalize your cover letter to the specific job description. Do research on the company and include the address and contact in your cover letter, addressing the contact by name? Generic cover letters are sure to end up in the garbage, so avoid phrases like "Dear Sir or Madam." Other overly used language to avoid include: "juggle multiple tasks" or "excellent written and verbal communication skills." Let your cover letter show that you have made an effort to know of the company. In terms of the resume itself, you should start out with a written draft to be sure you have organized your work history correctly. A poorly organized resume can mean the difference between getting called in for an interview or not. If you don't want to go the route of using a resume builder template, you can list your employment experience manually in chronological order. Many people like to use this format as potential employers can get a sense of your past work experience and duties. If there are any gaps in your work history, and you are called in for an interview that will be your opportunity to explain why. Make sure to include relevant information about your computer skills, awards, volunteer experience, certificates and education. Under each job description talk about your success in that position and how you contributed positively in that role. Always keep your resume updated even if you do something as minimal as taking a computer class. Remember those in the human resources profession receives hundreds of resumes at any given time. It's what's in your resume that will make yours stand out from all the rest. It may seem challenging at first to write one, but it is a necessary step in obtaining employment.
