Oxford Management Services: Do They Have A Bad Reputation?

by Louis Artesslio

Oxford Management Services (OMS) are just one of a number of debt collections agencies currently operating in the United States. Debt collection companies have gained a bad reputation in recent times, and in this article we look at whether or not this is justified, as well as looking at OMS in particular.

A family-owned, privately-held corporation, Oxford Management Services is one of the market leaders when it comes to accounts receivable management solutions. The company has over 15 years experience in the industry and has grown dramatically in size over the last few years.

Despite this, performing an internet search for the company comes up with some surprising results. Many of the associated threads are from unhappy consumers who have been on the receiving end of OMS's attempts to reclaim debt.

So how might your debt end up in the hands of Oxford Management Services? If you fail to make repayments on any form of credit agreement (such as a credit card, personal loan or finance on an appliance) the credit provider will likely contact you asking you to rectify your account. If you fail to do this within a given period of time, the company will likely write the debt off.

Writing the debt off means that the money has been erased from the company accounts for tax purposes. It does not mean that it has disappeared simply that it has been moved on. Some companies attempt to reclaim these bad debts themselves, whilst others sell them on to debt collection agencies such as Oxford Management Services.

Debt collections agencies purchase the debt at a vastly reduced rate usually paying just a few cents for every dollar owed. This means that the more they can recover from the original customer, the more profit they make.

Companies such as OMG have a bad reputation because they often tread a fine line between attempting to reclaim the money legally and fairly, and overstepping the requirements of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If you are being chased for a debt by OMS it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with this Act.

If you feel that Oxford Management Solutions are being unfairly aggressive and violating the terms of the Act, there are steps you can take. The Federal Trade Commission is the main regulator of collection agencies, and can take action against any company not complying as they should.

The best piece of advice, however, is that prevention is always easier than the cure. If you are struggling to meet your monthly repayments on a credit product it is far better to contact the credit provider, and attempt to come to an amicable agreement whilst you still can
