Tremendous Hip Implant Recall

by Tad Kallas

Manufacturers are recalling an all-metal total hip replacement. There has been a reported high number of implants causing pain and range of motion for the recipients.

All 7,500 hip replacements shipped between the years 2004 and 2011 have been recalled. Surgeons and hospitals were notified of this recall after implant registry data revealed that more than 12% of UK-based patients needed to replace their implants within seven years and more than 7 percent of Australian patients needed replacements inside three years.

In the past there were recalls of all versions of hip implants because they high-failure rates. That recall led to thousands of U.S. lawsuits which are still in progress. The first of those lawsuits is reaching trial in California.

A few recalls for over the counter meds were for mis configured levels of active ingredients, metal and/or glass shards in the product, and questionable smells.
