TIPS FOR POLY PIPE ELECTROFUSION
Its a question I commonly get asked, "What do I need to concentrate on getting right with Electrofusion?" so I thought to put pen to paper and write down some important tips for successful electrofusion procedures.
.1. Keep welding area dry. If weather is damp, place tent and wind shield over weld area to keep moisture out of the Electrofusion joint.
.2. Never use an alcohol wipe more than once, discard every wipe after first use every time. Reusing a wipe can re-introduce contaminants to the weld surfaces.
.3. Keep Electrofusion fittings in the supplied bag until you are ready to weld. Any fittings that have been removed from their bags for more than 30 minutes should be discarded, as the interior surface of the fitting will be re-oxidised and is likely to become an unsuccessful joint.
.4. Ensure pipe ends are cut straight with reverted ends cut off. Pipes must be fully inserted into the socket and aligned, and pipes and fittings should kept completely still throughout the weld cycle. The best method for achieving best alignment and clamping is to use a pipe clamp, various styles are available for pipes, reducers, elbows and tees.
.5. Poly must be welded within 25-30 minutes of scraping, as UV / daylight quickly re-oxidises pipe surface, causing external surface to require a re-scrape. Oxidised polyethylene will not successfully reweld. If re-scraping is required, be careful to ensure that pipe or fittings outside diameter is within manufacturer specified clearances tolerances.
