8 Things You Need To Know Before Breast Augmentation Surgery

by Dr Kourosh Tavakoli

Did you walk out of your surgery room wishing there were some things you knew about beforehand? Here is a list of things you would be interested in knowing about before surgery:

1. Be prepared for the unexpected. You may have walked into consultation with your doctor expecting to increase your breasts by two full cups only to have the surgeon tell you that your skin is not elastic enough to stretch that much, and that you can only increase your size by one cup. The surgeon may also suggest that you have different sized implants inserted as a result of your asymmetrical breasts.

2. Prepare your home in advance, especially if you live alone. Before going for surgery, ensure that you have a couple of bras that will fit your new size. You also want to ensure that you have at least two weeks' worth of groceries. This should serve you well during your recovery period. Clean laundry and beddings wouldn't hurt too. Having all of these things taken care of before you go for surgery will ensure that you don't have to strain yourself for the first few days; which is sure to happen if you have to run up and down trying to get groceries and your chores done.

3. Ask for prescription drugs for the pain. Following the procedure, you will experience some discomfort as well as tenderness which will last a couple of weeks. To help ease the pain, you should ask for strong painkillers.

4. Get used to your new breasts by touching them. This shouldn't weird you out because touching them will give you a chance to get accustomed to the new size and how they feel. Also, regular gentle breast massages will help stimulate healing; apart from reducing pain.

5. It will feel like you have bowling balls on your chest on the days following your procedure. You can alleviate this feeling by exercising your back a few days before breast augmentation surgery. This will help ensure that your skin doesn't feel too stretched, something that makes you feel like you have balls instead of implants for breasts.

6. Do some light walking for at least twenty minutes each day following the procedure. This light exercise will help improve blood circulation in your body, thus helping bring down the swelling. The exercise will help deal with any grogginess you experience as a result of surgery and the painkillers you're on.

7. Try to avoid driving for at least two weeks after the procedure. Driving will tire you out quickly and will put unnecessary strain on incision sites.

8. Take some time off to recuperate. Enjoy reading some books or watching reruns of your favourite shows. Why not indulge in a little bit of ice cream? You sure did earn it! If there's work around the house that needs to be done, you could always ask a friend to help you out or you could pay someone to do it for you.
