Approximately 32 years ago, Peter Benchley’s novel “Jaws” made its appearance and soon became a bestseller, literally flying off the shelves. It tickled the fear in people. That fear became vivid and never left people’s mind after it hit the silver screen under the creative hand of its director, Steven Spielberg. An era of an uncontrollable fear of sharks was born.

Since then, sharks did not only end up with a bad reputation and became the real victims. The rare unprovoked shark attacks became news throughout the world keeping people’s fear alive. While some species of sharks became vulnerable or endangered, Hollywood made sharks look even more fearsome than before.

While in fact, an average of 58 shark attacks were recorded in 2005 which represent lower odds than many types of potentially fatal accidents, they still do happen once in a blue moon.

There are three types of unprovoked shark attacks that have been discovered and studied through the years. One of the facts that have been collected until now is that unprovoked shark attacks usually happen either close to shore or near steep drop-offs.

The first one is called: hit and run. This type of shark attack is called: hit and run. This type usually occurs in shallow waters or in the surf zone. Swimmers and surfers represent the main victims. In this case, the shark takes one bite and rapidly swims away. The type of injury is often located on a leg, below the knee and is usually not fatal. This kind of shark attack seems related to the fact that the shark confused the victim with a prey such as a seal or a sea lion.

The second type of unprovoked shark attacks is called: bump and bite. In this case, the shark attack occurs in deeper waters, targeting swimmers and divers and its occurrence is rare. The shark identifies the victim as a potential prey. Then it bumps into it to test if it is alive or not then it may take a few bites before deciding if it will bite again or not. This kind of shark attack is usually results in severe injuries and sometimes fatal.

The third type of shark attacks is called: sneak attack. In this case, the shark surprises its victim by lunging at it from below, taking several bites. These types of shark attacks are uncommon and the main targets are mainly swimmers and divers. The injuries resulting from the sneak attack are mostly quite severe and often fatal.
