Disadvantage and advantage of single phase motor

What is Single-phase motor?<br /><br />Single phase motors are types of motors with low horsepower that operates on 120 or 240 volts. These Single-phase motors are often used in residence appliances like washing machines electric fans and air conditioners. Many of the consumers are using these motors without knowing that it is a Single-phase motor. These are motors who can work 24 hours a day with less chance of over-heating. <br /><br /><br />What are the advantages of Single-phase motors?<br />One of the major advantages of a single phase motor is that it requires a two wire supply. Unlike 3 phase motor which requires a three wire supply. It is easier to plug these machines unlike in 3 phase motors that you would need to bother when the machine broke because you’ll have trouble attaching the right wire. Even though this motors are not that cheap this motors are very reliable and very durable. This type of motors can work for a very long time without worrying about them. <br /><br />What are the disadvantages of a Single-phase motors?<br /><br />People in the industrial side are not quite content with these type of motors because their power is limited and they do not have good starting torque and have complex starting switch. This can be very disturbing and very time consuming unlike three phase motors which have unlike Three phase motors can have a high starting torque and the rotating magnetic field in very smooth. They are also available in a range of sizes from a fraction of one horse-power to many thousands of horse-power and they usually have only one moving part. <br /><br />The downside is that by definition, they require a three wire supply and sometimes, a four wire supply. Factories would prefer installing and maintaining electric motors, even in the small units. Because three phase motors are easier and cheaper to maintain. But there are some factories which relies more on single phase motors.
