The Benefits Of Having An NHS Dentist

by June Barrack

It can often be a little confusing to know if your dentist provides NHS treatments to patients or not. Also many dentists have a full list of NHS patients and do not have the capacity to accept new patients onto their list. Often NHS dentists will treat particular sets of individuals, such as people receiving certain benefits or children. Some dentists do not take on any NHS patients at all, while many provide both a level of NHS and private treatment.

If you are looking for an NHS dentist you can search online to find one (as many dentists have their own website), or you can contact your local NHS board for further details.

When you have found a dentist that can accept you as a patient you will have to register with them. Once this has been completed they will then set up a suitable appointment for a check up, so that the dentist can examine your teeth, gums and mouth. At this point the dentist may enquire about any health issues you may be experiencing.

Once your check up has been completed your NHS dentist will then be able to determine which course of treatment you require. This may be anything from a simple clean and polish to something that is more complicated, for example, root canal treatment. You will be given a plan of any treatment you may need and an estimate of how much it will cost.

Commonly people may require a small filling which is used to fix a small hole in the tooth as a result of tooth decay. There are many types of materials which are used to fill these gaps the strongest being amalgam. Amalgam is prepared from a combination of metals, such as, silver, copper and tin and is often used on molars as it is very hard wearing. Filling materials which are designed to match your tooth colour can be made from either a composite or synthetic resin. This type of white filling is available on the NHS, where the filling will be seen, on the for front teeth.

Some treatments are not included under the NHS dental scheme, for example if you wanted white fillings or white crowns specifically in the back teeth these would not be included. Also any type of cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening or veneers would not be part of NHS treatments.

NHS dentist provide an excellent range of dental treatments. However, it is very important to have regular dental check-ups whether you are a private or an NHS patient. By having your mouth, teeth and gums checked on a regular basis by a professional can significantly reduce your need for treatment. Gum disease is one of the most frequent causes of tooth loss and is a preventable disease. By regularly brushing teeth and gums you can remove the destructive plaque which if allowed to build up can result in sore, inflamed gums. A dentist or dental hygienist can provide advice on how best to tackle this issue.

Frequent check-ups can also be beneficial for detecting the early signs of many other conditions such as mouth cancer. It is advised that if you have a mouth ulcer which has not vanished after four weeks you must have this checked by a dentist or doctor to ensure it is not an early sign of oral cancer.
