Strategy Ideas For Online Auctions

by Oliver Brand

If you have been considering getting to grips with online auctions then there are some things that you need to know first. First of all, having some kind of strategy in place is going to set you aside from the crowds. There are lots of people on these online auctions and they are all looking to win. In order to become a winner you are going to need to be one step ahead of them. Not everyone that uses these websites will even win any auctions. This is particularly frustrating for people that are using online auctions where they have to pay for each bid that they place. It could mean that they end up wasting a huge amount of cash, which is not ideal during hard economic times.

Bid volume One strategy that a lot of people use is to have a certain amount of bids allocated for each auction. This is a strategy used on the sites where the bidder needs to pay for each of their bids, such as a penny auction website. The bidder might allocate 1, 5 or 10 bids for each auction. Regardless of whether they hold the top bid or not, they will continue to bid until they have used their allocated bids up. This will allow them to ensure that they are getting the best possible chance of winning. Even if someone outbids them, they will have a backup which will hopefully get them the auction.

Allocating money Instead of actual bid volume, some people prefer to budget based on the cash for each auction. For each auction regardless of the bid amount, they will allocate the same amount of money. Some auctions this might mean that they have 5-6 bids; where as others they might only be able to use 1-2 bids. This can sometimes be a high risk strategy but in general, this will lead to high rewards. The cost of the bids that the online auction website sets is going to be related to the retail value of the product. The higher the value of the product, the higher the cost of the bid is going to be.

Picking items Another strategy that some auction bidders use is only to bid on certain items. For instance, they might just bid on TVs or products that they know do not get a lot of interest. Essentially, they are just trying to be consistent with their bidding. The more consistent they are with their bidding the much more likely they are to win in the long run.

Timing Finally, a strategy that tends to work well for a lot of people is timing. This is based on auctions that are going to end at a specific time. For instance, 11pm is going to be a time where a lot of people are in bed. For this reason, the bidding action is not going to be fast and furious. This gives the bidder a much better chance of winning any auction in comparison to an auction that finishes at 6-8pm.
