iPod 101

Background and information about the iPod.

by Shaun Connell

The iPod has become a cultural statement, showing off the "i don't need this, but it's pretty!" mentality all througout western society. Going from non-existant in 2000 to now being a status symble.

The iPod was originally created by Apple Computer in 2001, based on the PortalPlayer mp3 player. Jonathan Ive, who who Invented the iPod,was then assigned the task of designing it. Ive is famous for mixing his minimalist design with utilitarian approaches to the workability of his products. He didn't disapoint with the iPod.

With its sleek design, smooth exterier and rock solid performance, the iPod has become a staple in western culture.

"iPod" stands for "Internet Pod" and was originally trademarked for an entirely different product. When the other product fell through, Apple was suddenly left with a snazzy name and no product. When the mp3 concept came along, apple put 2 and 2 together and discovered it equals "ipod", the mp3 player. It doesn't quite make sense in terms of the name, but it certainly feels good, which is half of brand name marketing.

Jonathan Ive designed the glorious ipod. The mp3 concept has evolved since the 80s, but the designing genius Ive's took it from concept to cultural icon.

One thing is clear: the iPod is far from over, and has begun an entirely new catagory of tech toys, and business leaders must give it their ears, their eyes and their business plans.
