A Fish Named Ed

Ed is a small fish who was born and raised in Juday Creek. He liked Juday Creek. This small creek in Northern Indiana was his home. He swam every day in this small stream moving from one adventure, and into, another. His mother was always looking for Ed. He was so innocent and feared nothing. And often, Ed’s curiosity led him into areas of Juday Creek where his mother would have to save him from trouble.One day, Ed found himself about to be eaten by a large fish. He swam and he swam. He swam so fast that he became tired and needed to rest. But, if Ed did rest, he would be eaten. All he could think about that gave him courage and strength was to keep going, so he could be near his mom once again. Just as Ed was about to give up, and he could not go any further. He thought of his mom and what she would do without him. He began to cry as he let go of the life he had known. And then, off in the distance. He saw his mother swimming toward him with the strength of a fleet of men sailing into the stormy seas. She was swimming faster than Ed had ever seen before in his life.Before Ed knew what was going on, his mother had passed him and pushed hard into this large fish. The power behind his mother’s strength knocked this large fish so far that it landed on the ground outside the water. Once again, Ed was safe and in his mother’s love. Days past, Ed enjoyed his mother’s love so much that he did not want to ever leave her. Then, it happened. Someone was walking by the creek. Ed was curious. He followed this person. It was a man. And, he had a fish net. Ed had never seen a man or a fish net before and did not know what a fish net could do. This man looked at Ed. Ed stopped and looked at him. And, from behind this man’s back, he pulled out the fish net and scooped Ed from the creek. Ed struggled and tried to get away. But, he couldn’t. This man took Ed to his car and put him in a small fish tank. On the way to this man’s home, Ed felt his heart become sad.Ed cried and cried. He wondered if he would ever see his mother again. He was in a strange place. Ed never knew anything outside of Juday Creek. It was the only home he had ever known. Ed’s heart was broken. After what seemed like a long time, this strange man took Ed inside his home. Ed was placed in another fish tank and given food to eat. The man took this tank to a room and left Ed there. Ed wondered what was going to happen next. He was now in a dark room and living in a place that was strange to him. It was a place he did not know how to live in. All he could do was wait to see what would happen next. Later that day, a young boy came into the room where Ed had been placed on his desk. He shouted for joy. He ran all over the house until he found his dad. He thanked his dad for this birthday present and promised to always take care of his new pet. Ed and this boy played every day together. Ed grew to love him and had fun with his new friend.Although Ed would miss his mom on occasions, Ed was busy getting to know this young boy. A strange creature Ed thought. Ed often wondered where this boy’s tail was or why he didn’t need water to survive. At night, Ed would cry because he missed his mom. As the boy grew, he spent less and less time with Ed. This boy’s friends became more important than his friendship with Ed. Again, Ed was left alone. Sometimes, it was days before Ed would get his new friend’s attention. The man who took Ed from his mom began to feed Ed because the boy forgot all about taking care of Ed. Ed felt very lonely. It would be days, and even, months going by before his new young friend would even look at Ed. Inside Ed’s sadness, something came alive. He started remembering the days he was with his mother in Juday Creek. These fond memories made him happy and sad. He thought to himself “I wonder where my mom is now?”This memory did something inside Ed. He began to notice a world inside of himself he had not known before. Inside himself, Ed could create adventures. He could use these imaginary adventures to give him joy in his small fish tank. For the first time in Ed’s life after being taken from his home in Northern Indiana, Ed decided to create his life from what was inside him.A new feeling of energy began to fill Ed’s heart with a new life. Even though Ed’s past was gone forever, he had his memories. These memories were alive inside of him and could not die. He knew he could not go back to Juday Creek, but he did begin to know that the world he lived in and the world inside him - had changed him.
