Financial Sustainability of Travel and Vacation

by Johnathon Black

Leisurely travel and vacation are mainly intended for enjoyment and relaxation. However, this does not necessarily mean that wantonly spending hard-earned money is justified. Some level of upper limit on splurging cash must be set. Otherwise, there is a good chance that a vacation might turn out to be something that will be regretted afterwards instead of cherishing its good memories. One does not need to spend a fortune when on a vacation. There are some simple financial strategies that can be applied to avoid overspending during a leisurely travel-vacation.

Determine the budget

The initial step that should be done is to set a limit on the budget. It does not need to be an exact figure but it has to be reasonable and within your means. Determining the budgetary limits mainly depends on the available financial resources. It could come from regular income or from savings.

People who are well off typically have large enough income to afford luxuries such as occasional travel-vacations. The budget from the regular monthly income should be set aside from the disposable portion of the income. This means that all regular and necessary expenses such as bills, mortgage payments, and household food budget must not be sacrificed.

Savings may also be set aside specifically for travel and vacation. The amount can be specified depending on the planned destination. It would be much easier and wise to save money for vacation instead of using credit cards. Comparative evaluations of various travel and vacation packages can also help on setting up a target amount that should be saved.

The budget must be itemized in terms of transportation expenses, food expenses and accommodation expenses. The expenses for shopping must also be budgeted. Miscellaneous and emergency funds should also be set aside for foreseen and unforeseen contingencies.

Choose the destination

The cost of a vacation will largely depend on the target destination. Farther destinations are typically more expensive than local destinations. This is especially true for overseas destinations. Traveling inside your own country is almost always less expensive than travelling abroad in terms of transportation and accommodation.

Hence, it is crucial to research on the intended destinations. You should not rely too much on the information given by travel agencies. It is better to have your own research when it comes to finding the most cost-effective airfares and hotels.

Share financial burden

If you can go on a vacation with friends, you may be able to save if you divide the financial burden among yourselves in terms of accommodations. For instance, the rent for a big houseboat or a vacation house can be shared. The fees for car rentals and taxis may also be shared if there are common tour destinations. Have an itinerary

Although a leisurely vacation does not need to be too regimented or formal, having an itinerary will help in making the vacation and travel more interesting and efficient. Resources in terms of time and money can be optimized in this manner. Impulsive side trips and expenses can be avoided in this manner.
