Just What Are The Risks Of Developing Prostate Cancer And What Can Be Done To Prevent It

Assessing the risk of getting prostate cancer and working out what you can do to prevent it is a question of understanding the condition itself.

by Donald Saunders

For some years now there has been a great deal of argument about prostate cancer and the subject of prostate cancer prevention specifically is still rather controversial. Although, as with many cancers, men do not themselves cause the onset of prostate cancer, there are clearly a variety of risk factors for developing the disease and there is much which can be done, if not to prevent it, then without doubt to lessen the risk of developing it.

The initial step in preventing prostate cancer is simply to understand that you are at risk of getting the condition and to know exactly why you are at risk.

There can be no doubt that men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk and that the risk for someone with one close relative suffering from prostate cancer is roughly twice that of someone without any family history. With two close relatives then the risk increases to approximately five times that of someone without any family history and with three close relatives the risk reaches an almost incredible ninety-seven percent.

One problem here is that many men are unaware of their family history, commonly because many fathers, grandfathers or brothers have died from other illnesses without even knowing they had prostate cancer. This happens because prostate cancer frequently develops late in life and can be an extremely slow growing cancer. As a result there is a fair chance of individuals developing other conditions together with their prostate cancer and it is these other conditions which ultimately result in their death.

Accordingly, if you are uncertain of your family history, then a good starting point is to try to check things out if at all possible. If this is not possible, then it is probably best to err on the side of caution and to believe that you might be at risk rather than simply assume that you are in the clear.

Another very important factor is race. For example, African American men are at more risk than Hispanic men who, in turn, are at more risk than Caucasian men. For an African American man the risk is roughly sixty percent greater than that for a Caucasian man.

Yet another risk factor is diet and men who are living in Western countries such as the United Kingdom or the United States are at higher risk because of the high levels of fat in many Western diets. Here at last is a risk factor which you can do something about and reducing the fat in your diet and eating things like more vegetables and fresh fruit can lower your risk quite considerably.

At this point we start to get into difficulty because, after the principle of reducing levels of fat in the diet, opinions begin to differ when it comes to other areas of the diet which may be helpful in prostate cancer prevention.

There is little if any doubt that levels of things like vitamins and minerals in your diet can have a dramatic affect on your general health and will without doubt have a part to play when it comes to prostate health. But, working out exactly which vitamins and minerals have a part to play is not a simple matter and is certainly a subject all of its own.
