History of Electric Motor

by Dominik Snyder

In modern times, everything that we see in our machineries or in our home appliances are running by electricity but do you even wonder what is it made of? For example, an ordinary ceiling fan or stand fan that we love to dispel heat is run by electric motor. There are lots of electronics and even jumbo industrial companies are run by these motors. Water pumps are run by electric motor. But do we even know when did these electric motors first existed?

What is an Electronic Motor? Well according to http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu Electric motors involve rotating coils of wire which are driven by the magnetic force exerted by a magnetic field on an electric current. They transform electrical energy into mechanical energy.
In a lame man’s term an electric motor is an electric machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. These motors operate through the interaction between an electric motors magnetic field and winding currents to generate force within the motor.

There are lots of invention which are similar to electric motor during the early 1800 but many of those inventions leads to the creation of electric motor. In 1820 the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy by electromagnetic means was demonstrated by a British scientist named Michael Faraday. It is a free-hanging wire dipped into a pool of mercury on which a permanent magnet was placed. This motor is often demonstrated in physics experiments.

Because early people are eager to create something brilliant different scientist such as Anyos Jedlik started experimenting with electromagnetic coils. He created a device called as “electromagnetic self-rotators”
Electric motor developed thru the years that follow then the First commercially successful DC motors followed the invention by Zenobe Gramme who develop the anchor ring dynamo which solved the double-T armature pulsating DC problem. Then Several scientist like Fracois Arago and Nikolai Tesla develop the modern day Electric motor. And American companies like the General Electric Company develops three-phase motors. Westinghouse also created their version of electric motors. Then after all these inventors and physicist develop electric motors other companies created the same electric motor which is lighter and smaller that is cheaper.

Almost 30,000 companies worldwide use electric motor for different functions. And these motors grew in different forms and different prices. In the UK alone, demand for electric motors grew by 30% then Asian manufacturers produce almost 40,000 unites of electric motors every day for just European markets.
