Being a Vegetarian

Vegetarian

by Kathy Barnikel

Before anyone makes the decision to become a vegetarian, they often question whether it will make any difference. Although people considering this will ask what difference will one person make? Ok, so a single person will not change the planet a great deal on their own but there is strength in numbers and it will alter the lives of many animals that would have been killed. A diet made up largely of meat causes heart problems which are the most common causes of death in the United States and other meat consuming countries.

Meat, dairy produce and eggs are the main sources of cholesterol which are the contributing factors in coronary heart disease and other circulation problems. According to Earth Save, the average vegetarian has about a quarter of a chance of having a heart attack as the average person. For those who go one step further and become vegans the figure lowers even still to an amazing one in ten chance. In addition to heart health, you will get a number of other health benefits as a vegetarian.

There is less likelihood of cancer owing to the reduced number of preservatives that will be in your diet compared to a person that regularly eats meat. Animal feed also contains hormones to make them put weight on faster so vegetarians are not usually exposed to these chemicals which most people consume everyday. It is also much easier to avoid the consumption of lactose which many people have intolerance to, causing digestive conditions. On a more ethical note, you will be surprised how much less suffering in animals you will be responsible for by becoming a vegetarian.

One particular study illustrates this point by claiming that the average American is responsible for the death (for food) of over two thousand seven hundred animals during their life. Even a single person could, in the space of a few decades, save the lives of many hundreds of animals which would have been killed for food. In addition to this, if you stop eating eggs and drinking milk, you will also reduce your share in the suffering and death of battery hens and their offspring, as well as dairy cows.

It is difficult to ignore the impact that eating meat has on the planet and makes the case for becoming a vegetarian stronger. It is hard to ignore the facts and the number of animal lives that would be saved is huge, not to mention the reduction in your chances of contracting a heart condition or cancer.
