Are Roads Too Dangerous For Bicycles?

With roads in the UK close to breaking point, have they just become too dangerous for vulnerable cyclists to use? It would seem so as every week there is yet another report of a cyclist being crushed under a lorry or being backed over by a van. Even the most cautious of drivers will struggle to spot every single cyclist sweeping in and out of traffic or undertaking at the lights. There must be some solution to this problem.<br><br> Let's look at the relationship between cyclists and our roads through time to try and find a solution.<br><br> Past <br><br> Back in the day there were fewer cars and fewer bikes. Roads would have looked a whole lot bigger than they do now as cars were smaller and moved slower. Any car on bike accidents would most likely have been very rare occurrences and have been due to poor driving thanks to weaker driving tests. One of the main things we can learn from the past would be to slow down. Speeds were slow enough in the past that most accidents could easily be avoided. <br><br> Present<br><br> At present there aren't enough cycle lanes to accommodate the number of cyclists. With bikes getting cheaper, cars getting more expensive and petrol prices rising, it is no wonder that there are more people taking to two wheels but unfortunately there isn't enough room to deal with them. To make life easier for drivers and safer for cyclists in the future, we need to rethink the road networks to accommodate everyone. To keep everyone safe the best option would be to build raised tracks for bicycles above the current network of roads. That way cars would no longer have to worry about bikes and vice versa. <br><br> While this solution may seem a little farfetched, anything is possible in the future. Next time you get in your car or ride your bike, why not imagine how much better it would be if you could cycle along a sky track or drive serenely underneath one.
