Types Of Memorial And Funeral Floral Arrangements

When a loved one has been lost, it may feel like there is not much one can do to comfort a grieving family. Perhaps you yourself are experiencing intense emotions and may feel a bit overwhelmed. Throughout history, flowers have been used as a gesture of love and compassion and to this day, the offering of sympathy arrangements for the memorial services remain one of the best ways to show your care for the deceased's family and friends.

When deciding what type of memorial floral arrangement will be proper, it is first important to know what types of arrangements are most commonly given.

• Casket Spray- At services where the casket will be displayed, it is traditional to have a casket spray, which is normally made of roses and is placed on top of the open or closed casket.

• Floral Stand- As the name implies, these arrangements are placed on a wire or wooden stand by the floral arranger. These arrangements can be made from any type of flowers and/or foliage, and are only viewable from the front.

• Baskets- Baskets can contain either flowers, live plants, or both, and are normally displayed on a pedestal or table.

• Vase Arrangements- As with baskets, these arrangements are very beautiful and are displayed normally on a table or pedestal. Naturally, vase arrangements can contain flowers, but not live plants.

• Wreaths- The sympathy wreath is symbolic of the circular nature of life and the eternity of the soul. These wreaths hang from a stand of some sort, and can be created from any combination of flowers.

• Bleeding Heart- This display is similar to a sympathy wreath, but rather than being in the shape of a ring, the bleeding heart is a heart-shaped hanging display arrangement. The bleeding heart is typically made from red roses, or other similar red flowers, but can be created from any color flowers of your choosing.

• Live Plants- Live plants are a great idea because they look so beautiful, and when all other floral arrangements are gone, live plants remain for a lasting amount of time.

While these are the most common types of floral arrangements, be sure to check with your florist for more ideas. All of these arrangements can be fashioned in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and type of flower. Display arrangements can be made into any shape you desire, including religious symbols, organizational symbols (such as fraternal orders, etc.), or more personal remembrances. Sympathy and memorial arrangements are a great gesture of your love and compassion, and the funeral director or floral arranger will be able to help you decide what will be best for you.
