Why Do People Like Golf So Much?
Swinging clubs at balls has mass appeal...
Who likes golf? Business men, kids, older people, single mothers, priests, farmers, dress makers, tuna fishermen, Santa Claus impersonators...everyone basically. But when you think about it, it is a bit of a strange sport: hitting a tiny ball up and down the countryside trying to find a small hole. The level to which golf has risen is incredible too. It has been around since the times of the Romans in different shapes and forms and is now a multibillion dollar global business. So what is it that makes a regular Tom, Dick or Tiger hit the fairways?

Fitness

Most people get involved in new games or sports because their friends or family do or of they are looking for a way to get more exercise...but not too much. Golf is a game which attracts people partly because it is a game which (like darts) doesn't need any extra physical fitness. As long as you can carry a bag and walk around a field for a few hours, you can play.

Competition

Some people are most attracted by the competitive nature of the sport. Playing golf well takes real skill and determination to get good. Most people who like competition will enjoy any game, but golf is particularly good as the skill level needs to be so high to even begin to compete. The prestige it is possible to gain from winning a competition or even just beating your mates is always attractive.

Freedom

Playing golf is a great way for people to get away from it all for a few hours. The manicured lawns and landscaped greenery which make up golf courses can at times feel like another world where an individual can forget their troubles for a while and focus on enjoying the game and beating their lowest score.

Skill

It is possible to spend a great deal of money training and practicing golf. You may have noticed the many golf shops on your high street lined with row upon row of different shaped clubs and shoes, driving aids and swing developers which you can use to improve your game so you can end up playing some corporate golf. Some people hate this sort of faff, while others absolutely revel in it. For some this is the best bit of golf while for others it is the pleasure of jetting off to fancy golf accommodation at some of the top golf resorts in the world...eventually.

Escapism

One of the best reasons people give for playing golf, like with many sports and games, is that it's an opportunity to escape from the trappings of everyday life and enjoy an afternoon with friends or on your own, playing a game. Some people do this with a computer game or a movie but golf will always be an attractive option for people looking for a nice break in the open.
